About City of Edinburgh Council

The council are working towards an ambitious goal of being a net zero, climate resilient and nature positive city. This investment programme gives residents the opportunity to get involved and help them push to be a healthier, thriving and inclusive capital for everyone.

The programme will choose projects that can reduce climate damaging emissions, prepare for the impacts of climate change (like flooding and heatwaves), protecting nature and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

How is the council using the money raised?

The City of Edinburgh Council will use the money raised to deliver nature-based projects including tree planting and flood prevention through sustainable drainage systems in key parts of the city. These projects can reduce emissions, offer cooler spaces during heatwaves and reduce flooding risk during heavy rainstorms. They will also boost biodiversity and improve access to nature and the benefits it brings. These projects are expected to include:

  • Tree planting/expanding the Canopy Communities project
  • Create and maintain sustainable drainage systems like rain gardens, rainwater planters and SuDS trees.
