About City of Edinburgh Council's climate and nature ambitions

In 2019, the council declared a climate emergency followed by a nature emergency in 2023 and made a commitment to become a net zero, climate ready and nature positive city. They are working towards making Edinburgh a healthier, thriving and inclusive capital for people to live and work in. They know that climate action has to involve everyone in the city and it is vital they support local people to act.

Their first investment phase will focus on local projects to enhance nature to deliver climate, health and wellbeing benefits including cleaner air and reduced flood risk. They have been working hard to increase tree cover, boost biodiversity and restore nature. Their citywide nature network, the first in Scotland, will protect and enhance the city's species and habitats and create nature corridors throughout the city.

How your money is being used

The council will deliver nature-based projects including tree planting and flood prevention through sustainable drainage systems in key parts of the city. These greening projects will bring more trees into the city to boost health and wellbeing, strengthen communities by helping more people connect with nature and reduce the impacts of climate change.

They want to make sure that everyone can benefit from trees and green spaces by improving access especially in underserved areas. These projects can reduce climate damaging emissions, offer cooler spaces during heatwaves and hotter summers while also helping reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rainstorms. They will also be promoting biodiversity and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Building a greener climate ready Edinburgh

Edinburgh cityscape and green space

Edinburgh's Climate Strategy sets out a city-wide approach to reducing greenhouse gases in Edinburgh while the Climate Ready Edinburgh Plan sets out the actions that the city must take to prepare for the shocks and stresses associated with climate change, like flooding, heat waves and other weather events.

These plans have driven ambitious action across the city from the Council, partners on the Net Zero Edinburgh Leadership Board, and businesses and communities across the city. They have been reducing emissions, enhancing nature and building resilience especially for those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
