Warrington Council
Warrington Borough Council wants to create the UK’s first carbon neutral town.

Warrington council has an ambitious target to become the UK’s first carbon neutral town, and has a strong track record as one of the leading councils in the UK for taking climate action. It launched its Climate Change Strategy back in 2007 - a whole year before the UK's National Strategy was launched - and declared a Climate Emergency in 2019.
The council has already made significant investments in green energy development, halving its carbon emissions since 2009. But it wants to go further, to become an exemplar green town, blazing a trail for others to follow. This investment enabled anyone to get involved in their plans.

How investors' money has been used
The council used the money raised to help fund the construction of a solar farm in Cirencester, to generate green power to offset the emissions generated in the borough. The hybrid solar farm is 23MW in size and includes 46MW of battery storage on site. The project went live in late 2022 and has been generating green power ever since.
Leading the way on taking climate action
The council has been actively working on the climate change agenda for the past decade. During this time, they have taken huge steps forward amid changing attitudes.
The climate and ecological crises are global problems that require action from organisations and individuals everywhere. In 2019, the council declared a climate emergency and committed to take action in the face of these challenges. The Warrington Climate Emergency Commission published a climate emergency strategy for the borough in 2022, which sets out the scale of the challenge we face locally and presents a road map to encourage local climate action.
