Sign up for updatesThe council declared a climate emergency in 2019, a nature emergency in 2023 and made a commitment to become a net zero, climate ready and nature positive city. The council is working with partners to make Edinburgh a healthier, thriving and inclusive capital for people to live and work in. Climate action has to involve everyone in the city and it is vital that the council supports local people to act.
This first investment phase will focus on local projects to enhance nature to deliver climate, health and wellbeing benefits including cleaner air and reduced flood risk. The council has been working hard to increase tree cover, boost biodiversity and restore nature. The citywide nature network, the first in Scotland, will protect and enhance the city's species and habitats and create nature corridors throughout the city.
We’re already seeing the effects of a changing climate in Edinburgh with warmer and wetter weather causing damage to property, travel disruption, flooding and wildfires. It is encouraging that we are already making positive progress to make sure we’re prepared for the inevitable changes we face but there’s more to do.
I’m pleased that, alongside the projects and plans already in progress, our new investment initiative will enable our residents and businesses to play their part - helping to support the delivery of projects that will benefit the places where they live, work and visit. By working together, we can make a meaningful difference to ensure we’re ready to cope with a changing climate.

The council will deliver nature-based projects including tree planting and flood prevention through sustainable drainage systems in key parts of the city. These greening projects will bring more trees into the city to reduce the impacts of climate change. They will also strengthen communities by helping more people connect with nature and boost health and wellbeing.
The council wants everyone to benefit from trees and green spaces by improving access, especially in underserved areas. These projects can reduce climate damaging emissions, offer cooler spaces during heatwaves and hotter summers while also helping reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rainstorms. They will also promote biodiversity and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Edinburgh's Climate Strategy sets out a city-wide approach to reducing greenhouse gases in Edinburgh while the Climate Ready Edinburgh Plan sets out the actions that the city must take to prepare for the shocks and stresses associated with climate change, like flooding, heat waves and other weather events.
These plans have driven ambitious action across the city from the Council, partners on the Net Zero Edinburgh Leadership Board, and businesses and communities across the city. Together they have been reducing emissions, enhancing nature and building resilience, especially for those most impacted by the impacts of climate change.
