Investing in a greener future for Southwark

Since May 2024 the council has delivered an extra 126 cycle spaces through 21 new cycle hangars. That’s hundreds more residents who can now affordably rent a safe and dry space for their bicycle. This means they now have over 750 bike hangars, providing over 4,500 bike spaces. With this added investment they are well on track to hit our target to increase this to 1,000 hangars, providing over 6,000 spaces by 2025.

The council have also been working hard in recent years to transition all their lampposts to LED lighting. Thanks to Southwark Green investment, since May 2024 we have installed another 1,000 new LEDs on our streets as well as 790 new LED lights in parks and green spaces. They have also been moving ahead with our green improvements in leisure centres. These buildings are some of their biggest energy consumers, needing lots of power to keep our pools and gyms running. The first part of this has been investing in a new building management system for all of our centres.  The new systems are expected to be up and running in early 2025.

Another project which will be receiving funding from the investment are a major retrofit project at one of our primary schools.  Crampton Primary School in Walworth is a 1960s school with ageing gas boilers and a Display Energy Certificate (DEC) rating of an F, meaning it is burning fossil fuels and wasting lots of energy and money. We will be making green upgrades to the building to bring it up to at least a DEC rating of a C, and replacing the gas boilers with new air source heat pumps.

Money from the second Southwark Green Investment has already been used to fund a number of projects, including: expanding Library of Things to new parts of the borough, which will help reduce waste and save residents money, key nature projects to protect and improve Southwark's green spaces for plants and wildlife, green drainage projects like rain gardens that will tackle flooding and a major green upgrade to Camberwell Cemeteries and Crematorium.
