Islington Council
Islington Council launched London's first council green investment to help it build a cleaner, greener and healthier borough.

Islington Council has a vision of reaching net zero carbon by 2030. The council is committed to cutting its own emissions, but - as its activity contributes just 4% of the borough’s carbon emissions - it knows it is vital that local people play their part in creating a greener future.
Islington Greener Futures was the first public green investment to be issued by a London borough, and allowed anyone to help fund a range of community initiatives across Islington, as well helping the council to reduce its own carbon footprint.

How your money is being used
Projects funded by the investment span across the council's key environmental objectives. They have used the money to fund electrification of one of the Council's bin lorries to operate on zero carbon fuels, saving carbon emissions and reducing air pollution. They have also installed 100 EV charging points for residents, as part of an overall programme of 400 new chargers.
In addition they have supported green energy and energy efficiency - part funding the installation of 4,200sqm of roof mounted solar panels, and replacing the lighting in Council buildings with LED lighting to improve energy efficiency and so reduce energy consumption. They have also funded communal recycling points on estates by improving recycling bins, new bin store areas and enclosures, extra signage and more accessible bins where these are needed.
Building a greener future for their borough
Back in 2019 the council declared a climate emergency. Islington is one of 30 London boroughs that have now done so, and in 2020 they published Vision 2030: Building a Net Zero Carbon Islington by 2030(External link)
The council is focussed on using its resources on those interventions with greatest impact. This includes reducing carbon emissions but also taking measures to protect residents from the impacts of a changing climate and create climate resilient communities.
