Glasgow City Council is committed to making Glasgow one of the greenest cities in Europe, creating a healthier and more climate resilient city for our citizens to enjoy. The council is now launching the second phase of our green investment opportunity to let citizens support our climate actions plans. Last year in the first phase, £1 million was raised to fund a series of interventions to help fight against the present and future impacts of climate change through the installation of renewable energy generating assets. .
We have now launched our second phase and are again seeking to raise £1million. Money raised will be used to fund a series of nature-based interventions in suitable streetscapes outside schools and care homes across the city. These interventions may include improvements to the public realm such as street trees, trees in planters with integrated seating, green walls, or other greening projects that help to fight against the present and future impacts of climate change and improve the quality of life for our citizens through healthy streets.
“The first phase of our community municipal investment raise showed the strength of support for investing in action on climate change. We were very pleased with the response on the initial raise and we are keen to build on this success. Increasing the number of smaller investors involved in the latest phase of the scheme is something we want to see.
Introducing more trees and greenery to our city streets is vital to creating a more attractive city and mitigating the impact of climate change, as trees help to cool hot summer streets and help to absorb rain fall.
Greening our city streets will add value to communities throughout the city. Supporting the latest phase of our investment initiative will help to make neighbourhoods more liveable and improve the quality of life for our residents."

How your money is being used
Glasgow City Council will use the money raised to fund interventions in the city to help fight against the present and future impacts of climate change.
They will be funding sustainable energy projects, supporting the installation of solar panels across a number of council sites to reduce annual energy costs. It will then be focussing on Localised Liveable Neighbourhood Interventions which is part of the Council’s approach to deliver upon the current City Development Plan. This aims to help unlock a step change for Glasgow in how people and goods move around the city, in the design of our streets and public spaces, and in encouraging more sustainable and active travel choices.
Building a greener future across the city
The city declared a climate and ecological emergency in 2019. Glasgow's Climate Plan was developed to address these recommendations and provide a vision for the city, demonstrating leadership in drawing together the collective action of other agencies, businesses, and communities across the city including the Sustainable Glasgow partnership.
Whilst there is an understandable focus on stemming the flow of carbon dioxide in to the atmosphere, there is also a corresponding emphasis on utilising nature-based solutions and nurturing our own relationships with the natural environment, which our social and economic systems intrinsically depend on.
